Ever since his breakout role in Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused, actor Matthew McConaughey has been associated with Texas and, more specifically, the city of Austin. Born in Uvalde and raised in Longview, Texas, McConaughey found his way to Austin and the University of Texas, where he attended college and began his rise to fame.
These days McConaughey is flying high, with critically acclaimed roles in Dallas Buyers Club, Mud, and the HBO series True Detective. Even with this fame, McConaughey and his wife, Camila Alves, want to settle in Austin to raise their family. Matthew’s roots in the capitol city, combined with the fact that his mother lives nearby, make it an ideal spot for the whole clan. The couple loves the laid back, but still vibrant, vibe of Austin. The weather, terrific food options, and family-friendly activities contribute to its allure.
Alves summed up the family’s sentiments best, stating, “It’s different here than in other places, and we really like it. It’s more relaxed and easy here. It’s our home and we love it. It feels so good to be back here with our good friends and family…. Everyone protects us here and lets us just be us.”
It remains to be seen if Matthew will bring along his infamous bongos!
