Austin is pretty well known for its variety of tasty tacos. The selections range all the way from the classic food trailers, to the hip and fiery dine-in restaurants of Torchy’s and Fresa’s. Such a variety can make choosing your breakfast tacos challenging, so here’s a list to highlight some great spots to check out:
- Torchy’s Tacos
Perhaps the most famous taco chain in the Austin area, Torchy’s Tacos is an absolute must for anyone looking a fabulous breakfast/lunch experience. Some classics include the Migas and the Potato/Bean/Cheese. Some more unique options include the beloved Wrangler (eggs, potatoes, smoked brisket and tomatillo) and the Ranch Hand (beef fajita strips with eggs, cheese, and signature “diablo” hot sauce). (Open 7am – 10am)
Although operating on a pretty tight schedule (Monday – Friday, 7pm – 3pm), Tacodeli offer some of the greatest breakfast tacos in Austin. To be fair, the prices are slightly more expensive compared to other locations, but you will understand where your money is going when you take your first bite. Try the “Popeye,” a taco with sautéed spinach, eggs, and queso fresco or the simple “Otto,” with black beans, bacon, avocado and cheese. You can even build your own tacos!
- Tamale House
If you’re looking for a place that will be kind to your bank account, dig into the Tamale House’s $1.25 tacos. These tacos are great quality for the price, but make sure you bring cash, because they don’t accept credit cards. (Open 6:30am – 3pm)
- Veracruz All-Natural
This wonderful taco trailer creates their own thick and warm tortillas, which perfectly compliment the rich eggs and al pastor pork. Try the aguas frescas any day of the week. Or, for weekend brunch, try Veracruz’s picadas de bistec with sweet plantains. (Open 8am – 9pm)
For a hip breakfast experience, dive into Fresa’s. Fresa uses marinated chicken, grilled over oak charcoal and produces fresh corn tortillas in addition to obtaining a stylish atmosphere. Breakfast starts at 7am and ends at 11am, so get yourself over there and enjoy some of the great signature tacos like the “Margie”, “Tricky”, or “Lorenzo”.
